Hello everyone

Well, that didn't take long- just under 2 hours. It's 250 pages with
several pictures (more about one of them later) and well 'edited' by Jon
Collins.

I won't give away the plot, so I'll keep my comments general.

First of all, it is a sincere book in as much as Mike doesn't hold back
from self-criticism or gloss over uncomfortable memories, particularly from
his childhood. It is, however, not a complete history of the man and his
life. I can appreciate that some events and secrets would have been
discomforting for other people and some could have been too commercially or
personally sensitive for publication. Which is fair enough. Also, of
course, only a real anorak would want a 9578902347580723 page blow-by-blow
daily account of every brushed tooth and plucked string. So that's us
buggered.

Secondly, the amount of detail on the composition of the albums diminishes
as the account approaches the present day. Tubular Bells is well documented
already, and the story around Ommadawn has been compiled by the fan
community on a 'balance of probability' basis as well, but it is good to
see the hypotheses confirmed by the man himself. Parts of this early
section are quite moving.

Thirdly, the prominence of exegesis is proportionate to its impact on
Mike's life by featuring it at the start of the book as well as in its
place. Mike recognises his psychological state prior to treatment as being
the driving force of his early creativity.

There are some mistakes and poor old Clodagh Simonds has yet another
version of her name in print.

The pictures are a variety of private family photos and established press
shots, although one of the pictures is the final track sheet for Part One
of Ommadawn. I shall be taking that to bed with me tonight.

Rob

:-)?

Tracksheets vary a bit depending on the studio.
Primarily they give you an indication of what is on
the tape so that when you put a multitrack tape on you
have some idea of what to expect where - keyboards on
tracks 9&10, bass on track 5, that kind of thing - so
it might be that not everything on the track sheet is
audible in the final mix.

Assuming Mike was using the same kind of track sheet
as on the Taurus I tracksheet which comes on the vinyl
copy of FMO, each track is listed on the left and
reading left to right is an indication of time - much
like you might have on modern audio/MIDI sequencer
computer applications.

Hope that helps,

Matthew Cochrane

allowed to buy anything as obvious as "Changeling")

Changeling, MO's autobiography arrived last week in my post and I've read
the first few chapters dealing with his early life up to his mid teens. Mike
admits to being rather lonely during his childhood, mostly brought about by
his mothers deteriorating illness, and the harsh regime of Catholic school
lfe (an experience I know only too well).

Before music music took over his life, he had an affinity with model
airplanes and motorbikes, both with last to this day

Mike's writing style is simple and direct, which gives the chapters I've
read so far a heartfelt quality.

Has anyone else received a copy?
