Paul (and all others who may be curious),

I was forced to change the server name a couple of months ago when I
moved the server to a new machine. At least for another few days, the
server can be accessed by going to ftp://static18.huntingdon.edu.
Hopefully by the start of February the files will be accessible by going
to either static18 *or* amarok.

If there are problems, please let me know!

Hello everyone

Some of the more elderly Amarokers might have noticed how much less I fill
the pages of the mailing list these days. This is because I gave up my
comfortable job teaching in a middle-class school to rough it in the
cities, turning around failing departments and under-achieving schools.
Naturally, this has meant more stress, no spare time and a massive increase
in the level of job satisfaction. So it goes.

My most recent move, this month, has been into a Church of England school
in Portsmouth. I probably shouldn't tell you the name of the school, but
just look at the bottom of the national league tables and you'll see it.
Being a church school that follows the missionary ethos of providing
education to the poor and deprived, and myself being an assistant
headteacher, it was my job this week to run five religious assemblies on
the subject of the Holocaust.

I decided to begin each assembly with a powerpoint showing images from the
horror with just a musical soundtrack as a background. Now, I was SURE I
had two copies of Schubert's String Quintet in my house, but both seemed to
have been leant out. Gorecki's Third would not have been appropriate for
the audience. I settled for the pre-production version of 'Broad Sunlit
Uplands' (to lose the harmonica and gain the Churchill).

The message of the assembly was based on those heroes and heroines who
risked (and often lost) their lives to help the victims of the Nazis- a
positive candle in a cathedral of darkness. The music was absolutely
perfect.

This has not been the first time I've used Mike's music in my job, but it
was by far the most satisfactory. And these tough, hard-hearted,
unforgiving little buggers actually applauded!

So Mike's music really does shine in dark places.

Rob

Australian Amarokers of a certain age should remember this from its many
screenings on ABC television in the mid- 70's..(or was it the early
80's?). From memory there is a really beautiful section featuring a
space walk with the hymn to Diana from Incantations
beneath....mmmm..tasty!

my ancient Sony WEGA has a NTSC on PAL feature - lucky old wolf, eh?

also I'm thinking it's a pity the music wasn't reworked because Magellan
would have worked a treat under some of those rocket blasts :D

Notes to self: Always Google to check facts before posting. Oil cogs.

It would seem that the original had a running time of 70 minutes.
