Subject: [Amarok] Mike Oldfield Profile at Universal website
The profile of Mike at:
https://www.classicsandjazz.co.uk/tssite/homepage.do?
ruleset=artist&id=51402037
has some many interesting comments from Mike and about Music of the
Spheres. What caught my eye included:
The next step was for Oldfield to record the entire album using
orchestral samples before handing it over to [Karl] Jenkins to be re-
recorded by an orchestra of classical musicians at Abbey Road
Studios. "At times," confesses Mike, who wandered in and out of the
studio during recordings, "I was almost moved to tears by the beauty
of the music."
The final step was the mixing: a process that Oldfield takes more
seriously than many of his contemporaries, and which can completely
alter the sound of the usic. "Mixing to me is as important to the
finished sound as the actual writing of the notes," explains Mike.
"What we recorded in Abbey Road would be almost unrecognisable now."
Oh.
Well then, he has fiddled with any arrangement Karl might have done,
and his conducting too, then, hasnt he!
Interesting, also, is the website's comment that "....its not a
symphony".

Subject: [Amarok] Music of the Spheres - 3 tracks
Maybe this has been mentioned before, but I just
looked at the track list for MOTS and I think
Mike's original claim of three long pieces is in
there. Tracks 1-6 comprise the first piece,
7-10 the second, and the last piece is
11-14. The first two end with a reprise of the
opening theme. The opening and closing tracks of
the third piece have latin titles...I believe
they translate as "World Harmony" and "Universal
Music", respectively (somebody correct me if I am
wrong). Tracklist follows...
jrs
1. Harbinger
2. Animus
3. Silhouette
4. Shabda
5. The Tempest
6. Harbinger Reprise
7. On My Heart (feat. Hayley Westenra)
8. Aurora
9. Prophecy
10. On My Heart Reprise (feat. Hayley Westenra)
11. Harmonia Mundi
12. The Other Side
13. Empyrean
14. Musica Universalis

Subject: [Amarok] Random MO moment
I was out today in the city of Chester, in England, and as I walked down by
the river, I heard a violin playing a familiar tune. The tune that he was
playing was part of 'Polka' by Mike Oldfield.
I've never been sure if MO actually wrote that or not. I don't think he did,
but it was still nice to hear an MO track being played by a busker. I mean
it's usually Oasis or The Beatles, or any band that uses four chords or
less.
I haven't written to the list for a while, but I have been reading. I'm very
much looking forward to Music Of The Spheres.

Subject: [Amarok] Pussycat swimming down the Mississippi
I was at a meeting last week, at a cafe, and the coffee was
particularly awful. The inferior sound system was tuned to a very
middle of the road radio station spewing out the worst kind of happy,
bouncy pop from the 70s.
I was deep in discussions about my upcoming trip to USA, UK and
Germany (I'll be in Munich, 4-6 October) when I found myself tapping
my foot to a rhythm track. It was sounding a lot like Moonlight
Shadow, so I tuned my attention and strained my ears.....it was
"Mississippi" by Pussycat (UK#1 in 1976 by this Dutch group fronted
by 3 sisters, equally successful in many other countries). Bizarre.
Meanwhile......if you go to see the film "Infamous" listen out for a
country version of In Dulci Jubilo played on acoustic guitar in the
soundtrack, about half way through.
Philip
